Curious Tuesday at Creature Comforts Brewing
After a beer filled weekend in Asheville, North Carolina I continued south to visit some friends and drink some fantastic southern beer in Athens, Georgia. Even in the middle of summer, there is always something happening in the Classic City.
The midwest has great beer but I can't get everything I want up here - more specifically, I can't get Creature Comforts Athena & Tropicalia IPA. Shortly after Ryan and I moved to Bloomington, Creature Comforts Brewing opened up in the old Snow Tire Building downtown. Once a car dealership, the brewery kept the cool garage doors and was able to utilize the large open area without making too many alterations and uses half for the tasting room and half for brewing. Thankfully they did remove the drop ceiling to reveal the building's superb trusses.
Creature Comforts has only been up and running for about a year but they've come out swinging with some bad ass beers that people from all over the country are taking note of. They've even taken home a medal from GABF for Curiosity No. 2 in the American Brett category.
I've visited the brewery a handful of times and I love going back. Despite being hot as hell in the summer there (no ac), the beer is cold and it's the perfect place to meet up with lots of people. Every Tuesday at 5pm, they tap a small batch beer that you can only get from the source. Since we were finally in Athens on a Tuesday, we had to go downtown to check out the latest Curious Tuesday offering - Tart Cherry Athena: their delicious Athena berliner weiss plus sweet and tart cherries. I'd sampled this beer in Asheville at Funk Asheville but welcomed the chance to sip on it again. Ryan and I had met some of the creature crew at the festival so like a good industry gal I brought them an Upland Brewing Co. sour in hopes we could do a little trade. They went above and beyond. BTW: the crew was canning a new imperial stout with coffee and maple (YES!) so be on the look out for it later this year.
Big thanks to the Creature crew for rolling out the red carpet for us. Check them out next time you're in Athens for a tour and a taste. P.S. Tuesday is Industry Night so you can get a sweet discount and they can now sell "souvenir" beer after your tour!
